Meet Sister Megan Rice, an elderly nun and peace activist facing life in prison for breaking into a nuclear arms facility. There’s Sister Simone Campbell, who rallied against income inequality and Paul Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” budget plan. Sister Nora Nash confronted Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein over excessive executive pay during the recession. Sister Joan Dawber provides housing and rehabilitation for survivors of human trafficking.

Pope Francis, TIME magazine’s “Person of the Year,” has been hailed as a progressive voice of change, but how will he handle the future role of women in the Catholic Church? During a time when nuns are still under siege from the very institution to which they pledge, Jo Piazza’s If Nuns Ruled the World (Open Road Media, $12.99, paperback, on sale: September 2, 2014) showcases these women as vigorous catalysts of change in an otherwise constricting patriarchy. These sisters offer powerful, provocative stories of hope that are sure to inspire and spark debate.
